Nominations for the 2014 Grammy Awards were announced today at the annual nominations concert, hosted by LL Cool J who hosted the 2013 ceremony, and which featured performances from nominees Lorde, Taylor Swift, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Katy Perry, and Robin Thicke.
Antipodeans scored big in this year’s nominations, with Kiwi superstar Lorde earning nods for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance, all for her increasingly ubiquitous hit, Royals
. Meanwhile, Perth’s Tame Impala picked up a nom for Best Alternative Album.
Melbourne’s Hiatus Kaiyote are up against the likes of Anthony Hamilton and Miguel & Kendrick Lamar in the category of Best R&B Performance. Speaking on their nomination, Hiatus Kaiyote producer and bass player Paul Bender said:
“All of us at Hiatus Kaiyote HQ would just like to say thank you for the honour of having our little home recorded moment in time recognized alongside the work of such illustrious artists. The last few years have been a surreal dream and it’s nice to know that this dream can get even weirder still!
“Massive thanks to Q-Tip for your wisdom and artistry, and to everyone who has listened!”
Jay-Z dominated the nominations tally with nine noms, including Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Album, for Magna Carta… Holy Grail
, and Best Music Video, as well as several nominations for his collaboration with Justin Timberlake, Suit & Tie, including Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.
Timberlake himself is tied with Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell Williams, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, for the second-highest number of nominations, each artist scoring nominations in seven categories. Taylor Swift received four nominations, including Album Of The Year and Best Country Album.
